Between 10% and 30% of energy in buildings is wasted. This can be due, for example, to the incorrect configuration of heating systems. With increasingly affordable measurement technology and smart building automation, it is now easy to record and analyze operating data from buildings. In his talk, Dr. Andreas Wilde presents simple ideas for making sensible use of this data.

Since 2016, the city of Münster has been publishing operating data from public buildings on an open data portal. As part of the iECO project, Dr. Andreas Wilde – former chief scientist at the Dresden division of Fraunhofer IIS – analyzed the data and identified potential savings. For example, he and his colleagues found that the water was running at 3 a.m. in a school or that the heating was running over the weekend at a day nursery – consequences of a defective toilet flush mechanism and an incorrectly configured heating system.

With simple, fully automated monitoring of the base load of a building and alerts that are triggered in the event of deviations from this load, it is possible to save energy and water in public and private buildings. In nonresidential buildings, these savings average between 100 and 500 euros per utility meter per year. In the video, Dr. Wilde offers some tips for easy implementation.
